"Tattered" - A Design Thesis
by Courtney Yu

Dress Transformation Chart

Painting #1 - Dress Shop

The vain Veera admires herself in the mirror as the seamstress and attendants fit her ballgown.

Painting #2 - Street

As she exits the Dress Shop, a mysterious Beggar asks for charity. Ignoring him, Veera marches past him to enter her waiting palanquin. She does not realize that the Beggar casts a curse upon her gown.

Painting #3 - Ballroom Wide Shot

As Veera makes her grand entrance into the Ballroom, she does not realize that her transformation has begun.

Painting #4 - Ballroom Med Shot

The guests look in horror as Veera's gown changes to that of a middle-class dress. Ashamed, Veera flees the Ballroom and runs into the Tea Shop.

Painting #5 - Tea Shop

Thinking she would belong here, Veera enters the Tea Shop. Unbeknownst to her, the dress transforms once again to a low-class outfit in front of everyone. Veera is kicked out and she flees to the Tavern.

Painting #6 - Tavern

Entering the Tavern, her dress changes again into the lowest of rags. Even ruffians have their standards as they literally throw her out the backdoor into the heap of trash below the town, known as the Slums.

Painting #7 - The Slums

Officially hit rock bottom, Veera's surroundings now match her rotten personality and she does not like what she sees. Crying into the muck, she regrets her past behavior as she must now live like that beggar.

It's been a long and challenging journey, but finally my thesis is complete! These paintings were part of a PowerPoint presentation with my recorded narration and artistic commentary, which I will upload at a later time. Please comment below and let me know what you think!

Alrighty, well I've extended my Senior Thesis to screen in either this fall or next spring, giving me an opportunity TO KICK EVERYTHING INTO AWESOME MODE!

DreamWorks Internship!

This past year as been crazy! For the past two semesters, I've been lucky enough to intern as a Trainers' intern in the Digital Training department of DreamWorks Animation SKG! It's been an unbelievably wonderful experience and I hope to work for this company in the near future!

Below are some pre-approved handouts and sticker icons I made as part of my internship, with edits and blurs to reserve rights to DreamWorks Animation SKG. I am only given approval for show.

Below are icons used for short-hand "hot keys" to be used in their in-house animation software, laid out on a template to print on pre-cut sticker sheets. All are designed by me and are currently in use by DreamWorks animators.

Below is a handout given to all new hires to the studio, explaining various web-accessed resources for all employees.

Below is a handout given for DreamWorks Animation's in-house lighting software, essentially a list of short-cut "hot-keys" for reference while using the software.

Below is a handout meant to be cut in half to create a double-sided laminated reference for employees unfamiliar with the Windows 8 tablet.

Below is another handout meant to be cut in half to create a laminated reference for the latest in-house animation software.
Below are slides used to advertise classes and services offered by the Digital Training department for the employees. I made many of these, but below are just a couple of approved examples.

Below are examples of quick graphics created to guide the employee through the new portion of the Training department website, currently undergoing construction.

Senior Thesis Update!

 Senior Thesis in Progress!

This story focuses on a vain, high class girl who snubs a mysterious beggar. As punishment for her vanity, her dress begins to change and grow feathers, turning her into a monster. Thus, her vanity literally consumes her.

Final Production Painting:

A blend of Early French and Italian Renaissance with some Korean influences, the costumes are an essential point in my thesis. The dress transforms with a step down in class, along with the feathers and grime that continue to grow.

The final look of her monster form is still in progress.
